Inspiring Advice from the Back of a London Cab
A Day-In-Day Out London Taxi….
To some people, London’s busy black cabs a part of the tourist attraction, a build up to the destination, as well as an integral way of getting around London; whether transferring from an airport, travelling to work or heading out for the evening, whatever the reason for the journey you can imagine how many people are welcomed onto the back seats day to day. Conversations between taxi drivers and their fares are common; however, the subject matter differs greatly. Typically, a conversation will centre on polite – but banal – chat about the weather, the destination, or how busy the driver’s day has been. There are even the few who refuse conversation entirely. Being a cabby conversation is more than welcome on those long days travelling through our glorious capital. Very occasionally a passenger is not only a talker but fancies themselves as a bit of a philosopher, it is these philosophical, analytic, and insightful conversations that taxi drivers love.
…To a Day-to-Day Advice Emporium
Mark Solomon, a Black Cab driver here in London has turned the art of conversing with his passengers into a popular blog. One day Mark spontaneously asked a passenger to share the best piece of advice he had ever been given and that one day turned into a hobby; collecting passenger advise. Mark started a taxicab phenomenon that culminated in the website Black Cab Quotes – which I urge you to check it out – and the brilliant book Black Cab Wisdom. Today, Mark simply places a clipboard on the back seat of his cab and passengers are able to write down their thoughts at their leisure. It’s a great way to build a bond between driver and passenger and gets around the problem of small talk.
Here are some inspiring quotes from Black Cab Quotes, each with a little addendum from me:“Be nice to the driver and the driver will be nice to you.”
